Do ‘WLAN’ and ‘Wi-Fi’ mean the same thing?

Question: Do 'WLAN' and 'Wi-Fi' mean the same thing? If yes, then is there any way that will allow me to share my internet connection to other devices using my PC? I access internet on my PC using a datacard.

Answer: Both Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) and WLAN (wireless local area network) mean the same - they both refer to a wireless network that can transfer data at high speeds. Since you connect to the internet using a data card, your Wi-Fi can be used to create a Wi-Fi hotspot to share the data connection with other devices.

Download Connectify (Free, from http:// connectify.me, works with Windows 7 only). Once installed it places an icon in your system tray using which you can start or stop the Wi-Fi hotspot service. You can also set a name for your Wi-Fi network and assign a password to it for security.

The software also shows the connected computers and devices that are accessing Internet through your Wi-Fi hotspot. If you have one of the latest Wi-Fi cards, you can use the same machine to connect to a Wi-Fi network for Internet access and have it work as a Wi-Fi hotspot at the same time.
